Your landlord gives notice: must you leave? General information.

Your landlord writes that you must leave. This does not automatically mean the tenancy legally ends on that date. Keep the complete letter and identify the contract type. An indefinite tenancy and a valid temporary arrangement can have different ending procedures.

For a protected tenancy, the landlord needs an appropriate statutory reason. Ask which facts support it and keep earlier agreements and messages. General statements about sale, personal occupation or a different use still require assessment against the specific conditions.

Check the notice period and whom the letter addresses. Obtain advice before signing consent, a departure agreement or a waiver of rights. Distinguish ordinary notice, a temporary end date and a proposal to end the tenancy by mutual agreement.

If a protected tenancy does not end by consent, court assessment may be necessary. A summons contains a specific date and requires a timely response. Have it checked immediately. Disagreement with the landlord is no reason to leave legal post unopened.

Write down your intended outcome and gather the contract, notice and correspondence. Continue handling other obligations carefully. If actual eviction is announced, immediately explain the urgency when seeking appropriate help. Read the guide on letters, agreements and court decisions.
