Ending your tenancy: prepare carefully. General information.

Want to leave your rented home? Start with the complete agreement and any extensions. Moving your belongings alone does not establish when payment obligations end. Identify which agreement you want to end and who the tenant and landlord are.

An indefinite agreement requires notice. A tenant can generally give early notice under an ordinary statutory temporary tenancy, while interim letting has its own restrictions. Do not apply one online deadline to every short contract. Have the precise arrangement assessed if uncertain.

Compare your intended end date with contractual and statutory requirements. Establish when the message must be received. Seek advice if minimum duration, joint tenancy or a special agreement matters. A convenient moving date is not automatically the legal end date.

Keep your notice and request written confirmation of the end date. Arrange inspection and returning the keys. Record the condition and read the report before signing. An earlier key handover does not necessarily mean an agreement to end the tenancy earlier.

List final rent, the deposit requested back and any later service-charge statement separately. Do not sign a broad settlement while outstanding items remain unclear. The guide helps you prepare; disputed notice dates need assessment using your documents.
